Sleep And Animals Q: Are there any animals that don't sleep? A: Researchers believe that all animals sleep. Sleep has even been demonstrated in the fruit fly. There are obvious brain wave changes that demonstrate sleep. If you don't let fruit flies rest for a long time, and then you leave them alone, they will rest for a longer time. There is a rhythm to it. It seems to be a primitive kind of sleep. Jacques Cousteau found that sharks sleep. Some animals sleep a lot less than us, some a lot more. Koala's and oppossums sleep about 14 hours, some birds only sleep 2 hours. Cats can sleep 18 hours a day. These species differences don't make a lot of sense to us now. The differences don't seem to be entirely related to what the animal is doing. Newborn kitten spend almost all their time in REM sleep: They are a twitching, jerking, jumble of fur.
