Central Alveolar Hypoventilation Syndrome

When sleeping, we normally take less air into the lungs. If the a condition that causes problems with gas exchange in the lungs is present, such as emphysema, there may be problems getting enough oxygen during the night. This can disturb sleep. This may not be a problem during the day because of the larger intake of air.

This condition is an intrinsic sleep disorder, meaning that it comes from within the body. It is a type of dyssomnia.
