Periodic Limb Movement Disorder

This disorder is also known as PLM. The individual with this disorder will make certain characteristic movements of a limb (usually the leg) in exactly the same way throughout the night. The movement is very rhythmic, and often occurs at exact 30 second intervals. Another typical movement might be a kick or flex of the leg every ten seconds.

Because this repeated movement disrupts the sleep process, the individual will usually complain of insomnia and daytime sleepiness.

This condition is an intrinsic sleep disorder, meaning that it comes from within the body. It is a type of dyssomnia.
