These episodes can last several days or as long as several weeks. Usually they occur twice a year, although in some individuals they can occur as many as 12 times a year. Individuals with this dirorder can sleep as much as 18 to 20 hours a day, and they wake only to eat and to go to the bathroom. The best described cause of this is Klein-Levin syndrome, which mostly afflicts teenage boys. Individuals with this syndrom exhibit not only hypersomnia, but als binge eating and hypersexuality.This condition is an intrinsic sleep disorder, meaning that it comes from within the body.
