Sleep Onset Association Disorder

This is another sleep disorder associated with childhood. (See limit-setting sleep disorder.) In this disorder, the individual needs certain conditions in order to sleep. Some of these might include:
  • the light must be on
  • a certain favorite blanket must be present
  • the window must be open
  • a certain favorite toy must be present

If the conditions that the child demands are present, they fall asleep easily. This can cause real problems if the conditions can't be met.

This disorder is a type of extrinsic sleep disorder, means it comes from something outside the body. Extrinsic sleep disorders are a type of dyssomnia.
